How to compose your photo shot
Photography Techniques
Recent advances in technology have meant that photography has become more popular and accessible. This is particularly so with the arrival of a new generation of user-friendly cameras have virtually eliminated so much of the trial and error regarding the capturing of images. Nevertheless, there is more to taking good pictures than going out and buying the most up to date or expensive equipment. It is also not simply about point and shoot.
Whether you choose a 35mm or APS camera or decide to go down the digital route, traditional photographic techniques, like achieving good composition, filling the frame, making the most of light and color, and including focal points, still apply.
Composition
Often, the difference between a good and a great image is the way the different parts of the shot are arranged. A well-composed is one that has all the elements in the right balance, resulting in an image which is pleasing to the eye.
A common aid to composition is the rule of thirds, which was originally used by painters but also apply to photography. It is an easy principle to learn, and once you have mastered it’s use, you should find that your photographs will look more balanced.
This is how it is done. Imagine the scene divided up by two vertical and horizontal lines to produce nine equally sized rectangles. You then compose the scene so that the object of the interest sits at one of the points where the lines intersect. This means that the subject is positioned one third to the left or right of the edge of the frame and one third from the top or bottom of it. So if you’re photographing a landscape and there is a single tree in the scene, position it where the lines intersect, rather than in the center of the frame. Place the horizon on one of horizontal thirds rather than along the center of the frame. With the horizon positioned along the top third, you will draw attention to the foreground, while placing it along the bottom line will emphasize the sky.
Although the rule of thirds is used most often in landscape photography where it helps the viewer to find a focal point in a large expanse of scenery, it can be appled to almost any subject. Thus if you are photographing a head and shoulder protrait, place one of the subject’s eyes at an intersection. For full length body shots, position the subject away from the center of the frame.
Pay close attention to detail when composing the scene. For portraits, make sure there isn’t a tree or telegraph pole behind the subject. You have to consider perspective. Altering your position can dramatially improve the outcome of the shot. Let’s suppose you are photographing a building. Instead of positioning the camera straight at the subject and shooting from a normal standing position, get closer, crouch down and shoot upward. It is amazing what a little thought and movement can make.
Just as there are exceptions to every rule, so there are times when you may do so.
This is partricularly true when you are photographing mountain and lake scene. In this instance it would be appropriate to position the lake and the mountain dead center so that you can capture the balance of the scene in perfect balance.
